Blue Range RoverThe range rover concept began in the early 1960s with prototype vehicles but the discovery of the V8 3.5 litre engine was to elevate the new vehicle into a category of its own. Managing director of Landrover Mr Hurst visited general motors in 1963 and was struck by suitability for future vehicles. In 1965 Martin Hurst secured the rights to manufacture from G.M. this provided the heart of the vehicle that was to be the Range rover no similar vehicle existed, the designers had to be sure of the aims of the project. It needed to be faster, larger and far more civilized than the existing range. A new transmission was designed and 4 wheel drive system. The transfer box was lockable by vacuum control unit and more user friendly.
White Range RoverLong travel vertical coil spring suspension with radius and Panhard rods and telescopic shock absorbers making for a much more modern ride and comfort level never before achieved by Landrover. Peter Wilks, Spen King and Gordon Bashford where the main stays of the enterprise, a 2 door vehicle was a lot cheaper to produce so the 2 door design was initially used.
In 1967 Rover and Leyland  merged and the project was enthusiastically continued styling  was by David Bache, production was to begin by the close of the 1960s it was June 1970  that the  Range Rover was launched on the home market, the 4 door followed and the classic Range Rover was a great success, each new model is completely different and re-designed to keep ahead of the competition.
Black Range ROver24 years after first production the P38 was produced with launch date in 1994, 4 litre engine was replaced with 4.6 litre petrol engine and a BMW diesel engine version. The Range Rover was again totally re-designed and plans for the L322 where started in 1996 by Landrovers new owners BMW, this became the pet project of DR Wolfgang Reitzle BMW product development manager.
Ford purchased Landrover for a reported 3bn USD in 2000 and the project continued, the L322 went on sale in 2002 it was 9.3” longer and 2.6” wider and 1.8” higher, the wheel base was increased by 5.3”, 5 speed automatic transmission, M62V8 engine     4.4 litre borrowed from 7 series BMW.
In 2005 major update took place under Ford to Jaguar derived engine options provided a needed boost, Adjustable height, articulation and handling where improved and gave Landrover reputation for being the best riding 4x4.
A very soft ride off road with great capabilities the L322 was in production until 2009.
Range rover 2010 to present top gear verdict was it was one of the best luxury cars money could buy an all-round superstar, new aluminium monocoque design bigger but lighter than earlier models it cost one billion pounds to develop, 430kg less in 3.0 litre V6 model, 4.4 SDV8 autobiography was the preferred model and returned approximately 32mpg 0-60 in 6.50 and a top speed of 135mph.
Alongside the traditional Range Rover the range rover sport sold remarkably strongly a lower sportier SUV that shares up to date underpinnings instead of the less sophisticated rail chassis from Discovery Range, 288 bhp 3.0 litre SDV6 diesel and 5.0 litre supercharged 503 bhp petrol or 255 bhp 3.0 litre TDV6.
